General Maintenance
Disinfecting As Needed
To disinfect any area that comes in contact with a cell product spill:

Use an absorbent material to remove as much of the cell product spill as
possible prior to disinfecting.

Use a clean cloth or gauze to apply a 1:10 dilution of household bleach (5 to
6% sodium hypochlorite solution) to the contaminated surface. A fresh
working solution of diluted bleach should be prepared daily (every 24 hours)
for optimal disinfection.

Allow a minimum contact time of 10 minutes before removing the bleach
solution.
In the event of a cell product spill, the following areas should be checked and
disinfected according to the recommendation above or your institution’s standard
operating procedures:
• Surfaces
• Valves
• Seal weight
• Front and rear sliding covers
• Centrifuge bowl cover
• Outer rim of centrifuge bowl
• Centrifuge bowl
• Centrifuge catch basin
• Flexible diaphragm
• Overflow tubing
• Overflow bottle
The tubing slot of the RCD should be disinfected with an alcohol swab.
Use care not to get disinfection solution into the sockets of the pin-diode program
board (if applicable).
If cell product has spilled in areas of the COBE 2991 that cannot be disinfected
without disassembly, contact a qualified service representative for assistance.
Alternate Cleaning Methods or Solutions
Gambro BCT has validated the methods described in this manual for cleaning and
decontaminating the COBE 2991. Before using an alternative method, verify that it
will not damage the system.
