module, wait a few seconds before inserting the next module. If you attempt to insert modules one right after
the other, the system will display an error message.
•
If you plan to replace the removed module with a different type of module, you must remove the module
configuration. To do so, enter the
no module
<slotnum> command at the global CONFIG level of the CLI. If
you attempt to insert a module of a different type without first removing the previous module configuration, the
system will display an error message.
Before Removing an Interface Module
1.
Before removing an interface module, you must have the following on hand:
•
An ESD wrist strap with a plug for connection to the ESD connector on the chassis.
WARNING:
For safety reasons, the ESD wrist strap should contain a series 1 meg ohm resistor.
•
A #2 Phillips-head or flathead screwdriver.
2.
Determine what software release the device is running to determine if it is hot swappable and if issuing a
disable module
command is required:
•
If the device is running FSX software release prior to 02.2.01, you must first power down the device
before removing the interface module
•
If the device is running a software release prior to FSX 03.2.00, issue the
disable module
command at
the CLI before removing the interface module. (For example, FSX devices running software release
02.2.01 through 03.1.00x and FSX 800 and FSX 1600 chassis devices running software releases prior to
03.2.00.)
Disable the module by entering the
disable module
<slot-number> command at the Privileged EXEC
level of the CLI. For the <slot-number> parameter, specify a valid slot number.
•
Figure 2.2 on page 2-5 displays the slot numbers on the FSX.
•
Figure 2.4 on page 2-7 displays the slot numbers on the FSX 800.
•
Figure 2.6 on page 2-9 displays the slot numbers on the FSX 1600.
If you remove an interface module without first disabling it, the chassis will reboot (reload the software).
•
In FSX software release 03.2.00 and later, issuing the
disable module
command before removing the
module is no longer required on the FastIron SX 800 and FastIron SX 1600 chassis. This is referred to as
“Enhanced Hot Swap”.
CAUTION:
It is recommended that modules be disabled through the CLI before removal from the chassis. If the
operator wishes to remove the module without first disabling the module, the Enhanced Hot Swap capability in
software Release 03.2.00 and later supports this procedure for the FastIron SX 800 and FastIron SX 1600 chas-
sis. Enhanced Hot Swap (that is, no CLI
disable
) should be performed during a maintenance window. On rare
occasions, an Enhanced Hot Swap may result in a software reload of the system. The likelihood of this event is
very low.
It is important to wait a minimum of 10 seconds between the removal and insertion of a line module. Re-insertion
of a line module less than 10 seconds after the removal of a line module may result in the line module not being
properly recognized.
Removing an Interface Module
Perform the steps in the section “Before Removing an Interface Module” on page 7-8, then do the following:
1.
Put on the ESD wrist strap and ground yourself by inserting the plug into the ESD connector located in the
lower right corner of the chassis front.
2.
Use the #2 Phillips-head or flathead screwdriver to loosen the two screws on the ends of the module.
