Measure Thermocouple Temperatures
Note
Use thermocouple wire and connectors that match the type of thermocouple. For example, type K wire
and type K connectors.
To select the TC Measure function ( Function > Measure > TC Measure ), refer to Function Menu .
Where necessary, use
I
to set °F or °C. To toggle the temperature scale between the 1968
International Provisional Temperature Standard (IPTS-68) and the 1990 International Temperature
Standard (IPTS-90), toggle the
Temperature Scale softkey.
Equivalent , on the lower left of the screen, is the actual dc voltage at the front-panel TC terminals. This
is a displayed reading only.

Open TC Detect Softkey
The Open TC Detect softkey turns the Open TC Detect feature ON or OFF . When Open TC Detect is
ON, a small electrical pulse checks for thermocouple continuity that, in most cases, has no effect on
the measurement. If you measure the thermocouple with the Calibrator in parallel with another
temperature-measuring device, select
OFF for Open TC Detect. When an open thermocouple is
detected, Open TC is displayed in the TC menu, providing positive identification of the fault.
Waveform Types
AC voltage, ac current and ac power functions provide a waveform button to select between sine wave
(sine) and square wave (square).
Note
Dual output is not available on 5540A.
Waveforms are expressed as RMS for Sine and Peak to Peak (p-p) for Square.
