For optimal performance of the axles with electric brakes, the
trailer brakes need to be synchronized with the towing vehicle
brakes, and the break-away system needs to be properly
maintained.
SYNCHRONIZATION
To synchronize the trailer and tow vehicle brakes, make several
full stops from a speed of about 20 mph, and then adjust the
brake controller as required. Repeat as necessary until the
brakes function optimally. With proper synchronization, the
trailer should not yank on the tow vehicle or push on it while
braking.
BREAK-AWAY SYSTEM
Trailers with electric brakes are equipped with a break-away
system that will bring the trailer safely to a stop in the event
that the trailer becomes disconnected while driving.
The break-away system is powered by a battery box that
charges automatically when the 7-way plug is attached to the
tow vehicle. The break-away system also contains a break-
away switch with a removable pin attached to a cable. The pin
must be installed in the break-away switch and the cable must
be attached to the tow vehicle while driving. In the event that
the trailer becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle while
driving, the pin will be removed from the break-away switch,
which will activate the electric brakes.
To test the unit, pull on the cable to remove the pin from the
break-away switch, and verify that the electrical brakes have
been activated. The break-away system should be tested prior
to each trailer outing.
