Note
Installation and commissioning is to be carried out only by qualified personnel in
accordance with the operating instructions.
Check whether the EMMS-ST complies with what you have ordered.
Depending on the order, these motors contain a spring-loaded holding brake

Electrostatic discharges onto the motor of more than 3.2 kV can sporadically
result in malfunctions of the motor.

Function and application
The stepper motor EMMS-ST-… in 2-phase hybrid technology is operated on a
controller with power electronics. The controller specifies the direction of rotation
and the stepping angle in the form of a sinusoidal current pulse. The motor must
always be operated within its characteristic curves, as overloading and excessive
acceleration values can cause steps to be lost which are not then registered by the
controller.
The EMMS-ST-...-S
E
/-S
E
B is equipped with an encoder which monitors the loss of
steps or which in conjunction with the controllers CMMS-ST or CMMO-ST enables
the “servo-light” mode (closed loop).
The EMMS-ST-...-S
B
/-SE
B
possesses an integrated holding brake.
Stepper motor EMMS-ST-… has been designed for driving positioning systems.
The holding brake of the EMMS-ST-…-S
B
/-SE
B
is not suitable for braking the
motor.
The device is intended for use in an industrial environment. Measures may need to
be implemented in residential areas for interference suppression.

Transport and storage
• Make sure storage conditions are as follows:
– Storage times should be kept to a minimum
– Cool, dry, shaded storage locations protected from corrosion
(
Technical data).
3
Prerequisites for use
Note
Improper handling can result in malfunctions.
• Make sure that the specifications contained in this chapter are adhered to at
all times.
• Compare the maximum values specified in these operating instructions with
your actual application (e.g. forces, torques, masses, speeds, temperatures).
The use of force to move the rotor shaft will, under circumstances, reduce the
functioning of an integrated holding brake.
• Ensure that all applicable national and local safety laws are adhered to.
• Use the EMMS-ST in its original state. Unauthorized product modification is not
permitted.
• Take into account the prevailing ambient conditions at the location (
Technical
data).

Installation
Warning
Open cable ends on the rotating motor can under circumstances lead to danger-
ous high voltages.
1. First leave the motor uncoupled from the axis.
2. Make sure that the controller is switched off.
Cancelling the Controller Release signal is not sufficient.
3. Connect the EMMS-ST completely to the controller as shown in the following
tables. The ready to use cables from Festo (
Accessories) offer sufficiently
large cable cross sections as well as screening of the motor/encoder cable with
earth contact on both sides.

Note
Narrow installation situations can cause an accumulation of heat.
• Make sure that the motor has sufficient space for heat dissipation.
