ZHE+ Zero Headspace Extractor:

 Operation and Instruction Manual

 Setup and Operation

Setup and Operation

1.  The ZHE+ unit comes fully assembled and includes a set of spare O-rings and a

polyethylene tool to remove the piston from the sample cylinder. Inspect all parts
upon receipt: if any damages or shortages are suspected, call Environmental Express
immediately.

2.  Wet the piston with reagent-grade water and position it inside the honed sample

barrel at the appropriate height. (Initially the barrel should hold the entire sample
with as little headspace as is reasonable to begin work. The sample will be in the
“stepped” end of the barrel, not the “grooved” end.)

3.  Wet both plate O-rings with reagent-grade water and place one in each end plate

O-ring groove.

4.  With the toggle valve open, set the sample barrel into the bottom plate, “grooved”

end down.

5.  Pour in the sample.
6.  Center a 90 mm, 0.7 μm glass fiber filter (Item # FG75090MM or FG77090MM)

between the two photo-etched screens. Insert this filter “sandwich” in the top plate,
and place the large cylinder O-ring against the “sandwich” to lightly hold it in place.

7.  With the plug valve open, place the top plate onto the cylinder. Make sure that

the cylinder O-ring is seated evenly, and then secure the unit tightly with the hand
wheels.

8.  Close the plug valve down until only a relief “crack” can be seen inside the valve,

and connect the male/female quick connect.

Caution:

Before pressurizing to clear headspace, make sure that only a small “crack”

is left open inside the plug valve. This will reduce the risk of accidentally shooting

liquid sample or extraction fluid out of the ZHE+ unit.

Warning:

Do not pressurize beyond the top operating pressure of 50 psi.

9.  Slowly pressurize to clear headspace according to method procedures.
10.  For liquid and multi-phasic samples, shut off the plug valve after the TCLP extract has

been expressed and, if necessary, introduce the proper extraction fluid. After clearing
headspace again, your multi-phasic sample is ready for rotary extraction.

11.  For solid samples, when pressure reaches 20 psi on the gauge, end pressurization

and open the vent relief valve to release pressure (leave vent relief valve open).
Load the required amount of extraction fluid into the ZHE+ unit through the opened
plug valve. Close the vent relief valve and pressurize to clear headspace. As soon as
extraction fluid appears, shut off the plug valve and end pressurization. Your solid
sample is now ready for rotary extraction.

12.  To remove the TCLP extract, attach either a Tedlar® bag (Item # TB7000GD or TB2000-

10) or an acceptable gas-tight syringe (Item # S1005, S1010, S1025, S1050, or S1100)
to the plug valve, open the plug valve, and pressurize.

Use with Rotary Extractors

If you have purchased the Heavy-Duty LE Rotator (Item # LE1002 or LE1002-240) from
Environmental Express, you will need either Extractor Pad Set (Item # LE1603) or sufficient
packing materials to insure the immobility of the ZHE+ unit while rotating.
If you have manufactured your own box-type rotary extractor, place sufficient packing
materials around the ZHE+ unit to insure immobility while rotating.
