9 Central Heating Booster
The principle is that wet central heating systems use the majority of the fuel when the system
starts up in the morning after the water in the system has cooled down in the circulation pipe
work
The TDCH provides hot water to the CH system at circa 40 deg C constantly or at specified
times.
If a CH system starts up at 6 am the energy required by the boiler to get the system up to
operating temperature is a function of the start and end (operating temperature) temperature
i.e
Without TDCH booster
A Start temperature = 15 deg C
B End temperature = 80 deg C
Energy required= B-A (80-15) = 65 multiplied by the volume of water in the system V
X This equals 65 V calories
With the TDCH booster
A Start temperature = 40 deg C
B End temperature = 80 deg C
Energy required= B-A (80-40) = 40 multiplied by the volume of water in the system V
Y This equals 40 V calories
The energy saving is the difference between X & Y
9.1 Connecting the TDCH booster
After the TDCH water heater is connected to the drawn hot water circuit.
The central heating booster coil is connected to a
WET
CH system.
Standard or Combi. ( in the case of a combi boiler the drawn hot water should be switched off)
When the booster coil is connected to the CH sytem the TDCH acts like a
indirect unvented cylinder in as much that when the boiler is in operation it will
raise the temperature in the TDCH tank to the boiler operating temperature if the
boiler temperature is above the TDCH temperature, usually 55 deg C
1. Turn off the fuel supply
2. Turn off the electical feed
3. Drain the CH system
4. Connect a 22 mm isolation valve to both the oulet & inlet on the TDCH booster coil
5. Connect the ciculation pump to the oulet on the TDCH booster out let fig 7 on page 22
a. MAKE SURE THE BOOSTER PUMP IS CIRCULTING IN THE SAME
DIRECTION AS THE BOILER PUMP
6. Connect a 22 mm feed fig 7 on page 22 by teeing it into the FLOW side of the CH
system as near as possible to the boiler and the other end onto the isolation valve on
the oulet on the TDCH
