Tips for using your NOVAPLUS Digital Thermometer
Your NOVAPLUS Digital Thermometer is a durable and precise medical device. Here
are some helpful hints to get the best performance from the thermometer.
1. DURING ORAL USE, KEEP THE THERMOMETER IN PLACE WITHOUT
MOVEMENT IN THE MOUTH WHILE TAKING A TEMPERATURE
2. STAY WITH CHILDREN UNTIL THE TEMPERATURE TAKING IS
COMPLETED TO ASSURE PROPER USE OF THE THERMOMETER
Instructions for Use
1. PRESS BUTTON TO TURN ON THE THERMOMETER
A beep will sound and the screen will briefly display:
This is a “function check”, and indicates the thermometer is working properly.
2. LAST TEMPERATURE READING DISPLAYED (MEMORY FEATURE)
The thermometer stores the last temperature taken. It will automatically display the
last temperature taken after the “function check.” The thermometer will display 98.6F
on first use or if a temperature was not taken the last time the thermometer was
powered on.
3. THERMOMETER IS READY FOR USE
After the “function check” and the last temperature display, the thermometer will flash
“Lo” indicating that the thermometer is ready for use.
Dual Scale
-This thermometer reads in
F
(Fahrenheit)
and C
(Celsius)
.
To switch
scales- hold the bottom down from the
OFF
position until it powers on.
4. TAKING TEMPERATURE – ORAL, UNDERARM (AXILLARY), OR
RECTAL METHOD
Oral Method
Place the thermometer probe under tongue. Probe tip should
rest in the “correct area” as shown in the diagram. Hold the
thermometer in the same spot under your tongue with your
mouth closed.
√ = correct areas, x = incorrect areas
Underarm (Axillary) Method:
(Alternative method for babies or very young children. Although simpler, the axillary
method takes longer.)
Make sure the underarm is dry and there is nothing between the chest and arm. Point
the thermometer upward and place the tip well into the patient’s underarm. Fold the
patient’s arm over the chest to hold the thermometer in place. This method can take up
to 2-3 minutes.
PLEASE NOTE- Fast Readout Model Thermometers are NOT recommended
for axial (armpit) readings due to the body’s slower transfer of heat in this area.
Standard readout thermometers, VDTS-100U, VDTS-100B, & VDTS-100R are
recommended for these readings
Rectal Method:
(Recommended method for babies or very young children who breathe through their
mouth.) Lubricate the tip of the thermometer with a water soluble jelly such as K-Y
®
Jelly. Do not use petroleum jelly. The patient should lie on his/her side with knees
slightly bent. If the patient is a baby, place the baby on his/her stomach with legs
hanging down either across your knees or at the edge of a bed or changing table. This
positions the baby’s rectum properly for safe and easy insertion of the thermometer.
With one hand, gently slide the tip of the thermometer no more than 1/2 inch into the
rectum. If you detect resistance of any kind, STOP. Hold thermometer in place
during temperature measurement. The thermometer should not be used orally for
sanitary reasons after being used rectally.
5. LISTEN FOR BEEP – TEMPERATURE READING COMPLETED
A steady beep will normally continue for 10 seconds. This is the indication that the
temperature reading is complete. The
°
F sign will also stop flashing. You will hear 3
rapid beeps if the temperature reading is greater than 100
°
F.
6. READ THE THERMOMETER AND RECORD THE RESULTS
Remove the thermometer after hearing the completion beeps. Read the temperature
on the display. The temperature on the display will not change while the power
remains on. It is advisable to inform your doctor anytime a temperature is above
100
°
F.
7. PRESS BUTTON TO TURN OFF THERMOMETER
The thermometer will automatically power off in approximately 10 minutes.
Cleaning Instructions
Wash the area extending about 2” from the tip of the thermometer with alcohol before
and after each use. Dry the thermometer thoroughly.
