DimMax 380SLX – Instructions
Prerequisites :
Please thoroughly read this manual before installation and start-up.
This manual must be delivered to the user.
The installation of this item must be properly done by a competent person in
accordance to all existing norms.
Description:
The
DimMax 380SLX is a solid state & silent electronic light dimmer for
resistive (8 to 420W), capacitive (8 to 200VA) and inductive (8 to 380VA) lighting
systems, WITH 8W minimal load. For most of the dimmable LED lamps, the minimal
load will be 4W. An optimized mode exists. It must be mounted in wall boxes.
It is operated with :
- 1 red indicator to report status or errors
- 1 operation mode manual selector
- 1 minimum start level manual selector
- 1 (or more) external pushbuttons to
start, stop and adjust dimming effect
Nominal conditions : 230V AC +/- 15%, 50 Hz, T ambiant : from -10°C to 40°C
Foreword:
Today's new lighting systems include a lot of embedded electronics in LED lamps, e-transformers for 12V halogens or e-converters
for LEDs. The DimMax 380SLX is designed to offer maximum flexibility for all. Inductive loads are automatically recognized and
"leading edge" (mode 2) operated. For the others, the user can select between 4 classical or proprietary optimized dimming modes,
to allow permanent compatibility with the constantly improving lighting systems. For resistive and capacitive loads, the user can try
all of them at NO RISK, the unit will always remain protected:
–
if the selected mode generates too much losses, the unit enables its overtemperature protection
–
if the selected mode generates too high current pulses, the unit enables its overcurrent protection
–
best option will be the one not enabling any protection: a 10 minutes test at a 70% dimming rate will insure that the right
mode is selected.
The DimMax 420SL is designed for lighting systems. Other loads (e.a. electrical engines) are forbidden. Consult us BEFORE such
use. Among lighting systems you may have:
–
Resistive (R)
: 230V classical light bulbs or halogens. These are ALWAYS DIMMABLE.
–
Inductive (L)
: 30V wound transformers for 12V halogens. These are ALWAYS DIMMABLE. Always select a good
quality transformer, up to 380VA with safety fuses on BOTH primary and secondary sides. Halogen loads must be of at
least 80% of the nominal power of the transformer. NEVER leave the secondary winding open.
–
Capacitive (C)
: 230V electronic modules (such as e-transformers for 12V halogens, or e-converters included in a LED
lighting system). These are not always dimmable, TEST BEFORE INSTALLING.
–
Capacitive (C)
: most of 230V LEDs. These are not always dimmable, TEST BEFORE INSTALLING.
We strongly recommend to read the "Important note about maximum Led power" on the next page.
ALL LEDs or electronic modules connected to the same DimMax MUST be of the exact same type, model and power, with a total
input power not exceeding 200VA, and a total number of devices not exceeding 30.
Also, some lighting systems will only start at dimming levels higher than 0%. Therefore, following the best
operation mode
selection,
the user can adjust the minimum start level by rotating the
minimum start level
control.
Default ex factory settings: mode = 1 and minimum start level = 3% (controls are fully counterclockwisely set as on the photo).
Wiring
:
Proceed to wiring according to the diagram (230V disconnected).
Note : - the 2 "L" Line contacts are internally connected
- connection of "N" contact to Neutral is mandatory
- several pushbuttons can be connected
- NEVER use one pushbutton with several dimmers
- NEVER use pushbuttons with light indicators
- max pushbutton distance 25 m
- max wire size per contact 2.5 mm²

Mode selector and red indicator display
:
At reconnection of 230V, DimMax 380SLX will wake up and
light its red indicator for 0.5 second.
From start position (fully counterclockwisely set) of mode
selector, smoothly turn it clockwisely. The first 1/4 of its span
will select mode 1, second selects mode 2, and so on up to
mode 4.
The chosen mode is displayed with a visual code on the red indicator:
1 short red flash for mode 1, permanently repeated
Mode 1 = trailing edge dimming
, to be used with:
–
230V classical light bulbs and halogens (BEST at cold startup), power 8 – 420W
–
230V dimmable electronic converters or LEDs designed for trailing edge, power 8 – 200VA
2 short red flashes for mode 2, permanently repeated
Mode 2 = leading edge dimming
(also called "triac mode"), to be used with:
–
wound transformers for 12V halogen lamps (the DimMax detects them and sets mode 2), power 8 – up to 380VA
–
230V dimmable electronic converters or LEDs designed for leading edge, power 8 – up to 200VA
