Installation and Operating Manual
for twilight switches EDS 16 and EDS 2 E with light
sensor LF 1
Intended use and mounting
The EDS 16/EDS 2 E is a twilight switch for distribution board installation with light
sensor LF 1, which is designed for outdoor use. It is possible to install the switch and
external light sensor anywhere, regardless of the lighting to be switched; the distri
bution board easily handles the settings for the switch-on/switch-off thresholds. The
twilight switch may only be installed by an authorised, trained technician. Any instal
lation position may be used. Snap onto mounting rail according to DIN EN 60715 in
the distribution board.
Operating more than one twilight switch: up to 10 twilight switches (EDS 16/EDS 2 E)
can be operated in parallel with one light sensor LF 1. Light sensor LF 1 is connected
to an EDS 2 E at terminals S1/S2. From this EDS, terminals S3/S4 are then bridged to
the other S3/S4 terminals on subsequent EDS devices. It is beneficial to install light
sensor LF 1 on an outdoor wall that is protected from direct sunlight. North or east-
facing walls are ideal. The cable entry point must always be directed downwards in
order to protect the sensor from moisture damage. If the switch should only switch
on when it is as dark as possible, ensure that the amount of light reaching the sensor
is not disrupted by overhanging roofs or similar installations. Ensure that the lighting
to be switched on does not influence the sensor so strongly that the twilight switch is
switched off again due to the increased brightness.
EDS 16
Functionality: the twilight switch compares the current illuminance with the set
switch-on threshold. If the illuminance reaches the desired switch-on threshold,
a delay time starts. Once the delay time has expired the load relay of the twilight
switch is switched on. If the switch-off threshold is reached due to increasing illu
minance, the relay switches off again after the delay time has expired. The delay
ensures that the load relay of the twilight switch does not respond to brief lighting
fluctuations (e.g. lightning, car headlights).
Commissioning: during commissioning, after connecting the light sensor and oper
ating voltage, turn the potentiometer to the left stop to set the switch-on threshold.
If one or both of the control diodes illuminates, these will go off within the switch-off
delay time of 60 s. If both control diodes are off and the outdoor brightness is at the
desired level, the potentiometer should slowly be turned right until the green control
diode illuminates. This process sets the switch-on threshold to the desired illumi
nance. The load relay switches on after the switch-on threshold has been reached
and the delay time has expired. The red control diode indicates the switching status.
The switching hysteresis defines the ratio of switch-off threshold Eoff to switchon
threshold Eon. On EDS 16 models, this fixed parameter is set by the factory.
EDS 2 E
Functionality: the EDS 2 E compares the brightness, which it measures in regular
intervals, with the set switch-on/switch-off threshold. If the brightness falls below
the set switch-on threshold, the load relay of the EDS 2 E switches on after the de
lay time has expired. If the brightness exceeds the set switch-off threshold, the relay
switches off once the delay time has expired. The delay ensures that the load relay
of the twilight switch does not respond to brief lighting fluctuations (e.g. lightning,
car headlights).
Commissioning: after the light sensor and operating voltage are connected, the
EDS 2 E then starts an initialisation phase. This phase lasts approx. 30 min. during
which the EDS 2 E detects the increasing/decreasing ambient brightness curves.
Once the initialisation phase is complete,. the EDS 2 E defines its operating point in
the day/night rhythm, which assigns the set thresholds to the corresponding curve.
The desired switching thresholds can be set separately using a potentiometer. Turn
ing the potentiometer anti-clockwise makes the switching threshold darker. Turning
the potentiometer clockwise makes the switching threshold lighter.
When the switch-on/switch-off threshold is reached, this is indicated by an instanta
neous LED that has been assigned accordingly. A delay time starts when the switch-
on/switch-off threshold is reached. Once the delay time has expired the load relay
switches on or off. A red LED indicates the switching status of the load relay.
Important: the EDS 2 E functions predominately in switch-on mode during the ini
tialisation phase due to safety reasons. During this time the load relay is switched
on without delays if the brightness falls below the switch-on threshold, and stays on
until the initialisation phase is complete, even if the switch-off threshold is exceeded
later. The switch can only be reset prematurely by interrupting the operating voltage.

Guarantee
All professionally installed, unaltered devices are covered by warranty during the stat
utory guarantee period from the day of purchase by the end user. The guarantee is not
applicable to damage incurred during transport or caused by short-circuit, overloading
or improper use. In the event of defects in workmanship or material, which are discov
ered within the guarantee period, the company will provide a repair or replacement
free of charge. The guarantee will be rendered null and void if the device is opened
without authorisation.
