2.5 User Interface - QoS Tab
Q oS requirements are different for various data types such as streaming video or music, voice and raw data. To
provide higher Q oS for streaming data, priority levels can be set using tags at the beginning of data frames. V irtual
Local A rea N etwork (V LA N ) 802.1p priority tags on E thernet frames are used to specify 8 (0 – 7) levels of ‘user
priority’. H omeP lug AV powerline allows for 4 levels of C hannel A ccess P riority (C A P (0 – 3)). Therefore, the 8
levels of V LA N E thernet tags must be mapped to the 4 levels of C A P priority, where C A P 3 is the highest priority and
C A P 0 is the lowest. C A P 3 priority might be used for voice and network management frames, C A P 2 is used for
streaming video and music while C A P 1 and C A P 0 are used for data. Mapping V LA N tags or TO S bits to C A P levels
is easily done using the V LA N P riority Mapping function on the Q oS tab window.
2.5.1 List Views
The Q oS tab includes two list views to provide simple channel access priority (C A P ) classification for individual MA C
addresses and IP P orts. There is a collective limit of eight across both lists. N o delimiters, colons, or dashes are
allowed in the MA C address format.
To write these to the P IB , and other Q oS related values found on this tab, the D ownload P IB checkbox found on the
C onfiguration tab must be checked before exercising the W rite button.
2.5.2 Priority Mapping
The ‘P riority Mapping’ group contains both V LA N and TO S B it mapping capability. W hen selected, packets matching
the V LA N or TO S B it priority will be assigned the P owerline contention priority (C hannel A ccess P riority, C A P ) as set
in the corresponding dropdown box. If a packet has both V LA N and TO S in it, V LA N will override TO S .
