HARDWARE INSTALLATION
When set to RS232, power supply modes — standard RS232, RS232 with +5V, or RS232 +12V —
can be configured via jumper settings as instructed in previous sections in this chapter.
Connecting External Serial Ports
Your COM port may come mounted on a card-edge bracket. Install the card-edge bracket to
an available slot at the rear of the system chassis then insert the serial port cable to the COM
connector. Make sure the colored stripe on the ribbon cable is aligned with pin 1 of the COM
connector.
BIOS Setting
Configure the serial COM ports in the Advanced menu (“NCT6116D Super IO Configuration” >
“Serial Port Configuration”) on the BIOS. Refer to the chapter 3 for more information.
Jumper Setting
RS232 with or without power can be configured via jumper settings as previously instructed in
the RS232 Power Select section.

The serial ports are asynchronous communication ports with 16C550A-compatible UARTs that
can be used with modems, serial printers, remote display terminals, and other serial devices.
COM 1 (Rear Port) and COM 3 (Internal Port) support three serial modes, i.e. RS232, RS422,
and RS485. COM 2 (Rear Port) and COM 4 - 6 (Internal Ports) support only RS232 as summa-
rized in the table below. Serial modes of all the COM ports are configured via BIOS settings as
instructed in the BIOS chapter.
The pin assignment of each mode mentioned above is listed below.
