22  DIESEL ENGINE

BLEEDING THE FUEL SYSTEM

Bleeding air from the fuel system may be required:

1. After the fuel filter has been removed or any fuel lines

have been disconnected.

2. If the fuel tank has been allowed to run dry.

3. After long-term storage.

CAUTION

!

To avoid fire and serious injury, DO NOT bleed
the fuel system while the engine is hot.

IMPORTANT

The air vent on the fuel injection pump must
always be closed during engine operation. The
engine may not run if left open.

PROCEDURE

1. Ensure that there is fuel in the tank.

2. To eliminate air from the fuel filter, turn the air bleed vent on

top of the fuel filter to the [AIR] position. Crank the engine
until the air in the filter is pushed out by the fuel. Do not
crank the engine for more than 10 seconds at one
time.
Turn the air bleed vent back to the [ON] position and
start engine. If the engine will not start, proceed to step 3.

3. To bleed air from the injection pump, turn the air vent knob

on the fuel injection pump counterclockwise to open. Crank
the engine for 5 seconds, 3 to 4 times. BE ALERT - the
engine may start during cranking.

FUEL

FUEL LEVEL CHECK AND REFUELING

1. Always refuel before the fuel level reaches “EMPTY”.

2. Use diesel fuel only. Other fuels and fuel mixtures will

degrade performance and may damage the engine. Use
the correct grade of diesel fuel for the ambient temperature.

CAUTION

!

DO NOT mix gasoline or alcohol with diesel
fuel. This mixture may damage the engine
and can cause an explosion.

!

Stop the engine while refueling to avoid fire
or explosion. Avoid open flames and sparks
while refueling.

IMPORTANT

!

Always use clean fuel. Use a strainer if
necessary.

!

Do not let the fuel tank run empty.

!

Clean up fuel spills promptly and properly
to eliminate a fire hazard.
