Cable Diagnostics
The
Cable Diagnostics
Page contains fields for performing tests on copper cables. Cable testing provides information about
where errors occurred in the cable, the last time a cable test was performed, and the type of cable error which occurred. The
tests use Time Domain Reflectometry (TDR) technology to test the quality and characteristics of a copper cable attached to
a port. Cables up to 140 meters long can be tested. Cables are tested when the ports are in the down state, with the exception
of the Approximated Cable Length test. The cable length returned is an approximation in the ranges of less than 50 meters,
50m-80m, or 80m-100m. The deviation may be up to 20 meters. To run the Cable Diagnostics:

Fields
Description
Unit
Defines the stacking member for which the port settings are displayed.
From Port
Defines the port number from which the diagnostics will apply.
To Port
Defines the port number to which ports the diagnostics will apply.
Port
Lists the ports to be tested.
Test Result
The cable test results. Possible values are:
No Cable — A cable is not connected to the port. Whether the fiber is connected to
the port or not.
Open Cable — A cable is connected on only one side.
Short Cable — A short has occurred in the cable.
OK — The cable passed the test.
Cable Fault Distance
The distance from the port where the cable error occurred.
Last Update
The last time the port was tested.
Cable Length
The approximate cable length. This test can only be performed when the port is up and
operating at 1 Gbps.
