Brooder operation: how it works
Brooder systems are heating systems for independent zones, such as creeping areas of farrowing crates,
front areas, or wean-to-finish pens. Brooding zones are part of a temperature controlled house/barn, but
brooder zones are monitored by temperature probes that are not part of the larger house/barn tempera-
ture control.
The EDGE controller can handle different types of outputs for Brooder:
• On-Off and then used on a relay for a single capacity heater
• Variable (modulated, with or without relay)
• Dual intensity High-Low (2 relays: 1 relay =Low, 2 relays =High)
A brooder output can also activate many types of electric devices such as heat lamps, electric radiant
units, and heat mats that can be controlled by the On-Off outputs or through a modulated variable output.
Gas heaters are also commonly configured equipment on either an On-Off, High-Low, or modulated (0-10
VDC) brooder output.
Brooder operation depends on the following:
• Brooder temperature sensors,
• Age of the animals (when a brooder curve is used),
• House/barn ventilation mode,
• Ventilation stage
Brooder operation logic
To operate a brooder, the controller refers to the average reading of the temperature sensors assigned to
the brooder. Each brooder operates according to the average temperature of its respective group of sen-
sors. Temperature used for brooders cannot be used for house/barn temperature control and temperature
used for house/barn temperature control cannot be used for brooders.
The start temperature of a brooder can be determined as follows:
• Fixed start temperature that is independent from the house/barn set point
• Offset to the house/barn temperature set point. The brooder start and stop times are automatically
adjusted when changes are made to the house/barn set point.
• A brooder curve that can have increasing or decreasing start temperatures according to animal age.
• In all cases, the stop temperature is an offset of the start temperature
