This section of the manual gives basic information on how to begin riding your motorcycle. In this section
we will cover how to start and stop the engine, how to use the throttle and brakes, how to use the clutch
and shift gears, and things you need to do when you are finished riding.
To protect your new engine and enjoy optimum performance and service life, be sure you break-in your
motorcycle properly. To do this, avoid full throttle starts and rapid acceleration for the first 35 miles
(56 km) of riding. For information about carburetor adjustment(s) for riding in high altitudes, refer to the
servicing section of this manual.
Before riding this motorcycle, be sure you have read this entire manual up to this point including the
section titled “Important Safety Information (Pg. 6, 7 & Pg. 15) & Before Riding”.
Even if you have ridden other motorcycles in the past, take time to get familiar with the way the
motorcycle works and handles. Always practice in a safe are until you have built your skill level to a point at
which it is safe to ride.
Always follow the proper starting procedure as described below.
Starting When the Engine Is Cold
1.
Turn the key switch to the “ON” position (Pg. 12).
2.
Make sure the transmission is in the neutral position.
3.
Turn the fuel tap to the “ON” position (Pg. 12).
4.
Pull and hold the choke lever (Pg. 13). (XZ250R V4)
5.
Lift the choke lever up (Pg.15). (XZ250R-LC) (XZ250R-ZS)
6.
Press and hold the brake lever on the right side of the handle bar (Pg. 11).
7.
Open the throttle no more than 1/4 of the way (Pg. 11).
8.
Press the start “yellow” button (Pg. 12) until the engine starts.
9.
Release the button as soon as the engine starts.
10.
After about 1 minute after the engine starts, release the choke lever. (XZ250 V4)

After about 1 minute after the engine starts, push the choke lever down.

Wait until the engine warms up for approximately 5 minutes. After the 5 minute warm up, you are
ready to go.
Starting When the Engine Is Warm
1.
Repeat steps 1, 2, 3, 6, 7, and 8 in section “Starting when the engine is cold”.
For your safety, avoid starting or operating the
motorcycle in an enclosed area with poor ventilation,
such as a garage. The motorcycle’s exhaust gas contains
poisonous carbon monoxide which can collect rapidly in
an enclosed area and
result in illness or
death.
CAUTION
Your motorcycle is not equipped with lights.
DO NOT ride at night.
