4)
Interference-free operation between an Inmarsat-based SATCOM system and other
L-band (e.g. Iridium) SATCOM
antennas cannot be guaranteed due to inter-
modulation products generated in the transmit path. If dissimilar systems are
installed the separation distance should be as large as possible. Simultaneous
operations of systems may be possible, but will depend on frequency allocation and
antenna beam direction.
5)
It is recommended that
in situ tests be performed with temporary fixtures before
committing to a final antenna position in cases where co-location is required.
(e)
Engines and APU Inlets
The HGA-7001 must be positioned out of the zone of influence of the engines and APU
inlets. This must be verified by the installer.
(f)
Ground Plane
1)
The HGA-7001 requires a ground plane, usually the aircraft fuselage, to operate
optimally. The ground plane should nominally extend at least 0.5 m (20”) around
the antenna perimeter.
2)
The installer must ensure the 8 bonding points at the base of the mounting holes
are in electrical contact with the adaptor/mounting plate. In the case of a non-
conductive composite structure, the installer must make provision for a ground
plane.
5.3
Structural Modifications
5.3.1
Structural Loads
A structural analysis must be performed by the installer to determine what structural
modifications to the airframe, if any, are required prior to installing the HGA-7001.
(1)
Structural modifications may have to be made to the aircraft in order to accommodate the
extra flight loads. When planning these modifications, the following weights have to be taken
into account:
(a)
Antenna: 9.3 kg (21 lbs),
(b)
Adaptor plate:
≈
1 kg (2.2 lbs)
(c)
Mounting plate: dependent on type
Note that there are special kits for non-rigid mounting. Refer to the Supplier for details.
Adaptor/mounting plate weights in (b) and (c) are dependent on the aircraft radius and values
may vary for installations with special structural requirements.
(2)
Structural modifications (including a doubler plate, if required) are the responsibility of the
installer.
(3)
The HGA-7001 has been designed with eight mounting holes for attachment to the airframe
or mounting plate. The effect of the increased loading on the fuselage is airframe specific.
