Mounting the Chassis and Installing Supplemental 
Ground in a Frame Installation

Note:  

A supplemental ground connection is required for 3916 DC 

Standard installations. The supplemental ground connection is optional for 
3916 AC Standard and 3916 Dual AC Standard installations. A 
supplemental ground connection is not required or available for mini 
chassis systems. For systems that do not require a supplemental ground 
connection see 

“Mounting the Chassis (Supplemental Ground not 

required) in a Frame Installation” on page 2-24

 for a procedure.

If your installation site allows access to the left side of the chassis, you can 
install the supplemental ground connection after the chassis is mounted. 
However, if you will not be able to access the ground lug location after it is 
mounted, you will need to install the supplemental ground connection before 
mounting the chassis in the cabinet or frame. For more information see 

“Grounding the Chassis” on page 2-6

.

The following procedure explains how to mount the chassis and connect the 
3916 to supplemental ground when the 3916 is installed in a frame. 

Step

Action

If this is a 3916 Standard system installation, determine if the installation site 
will allow you to access the ground location on the left side of the chassis after 
mounting. See 

Figure 2-1 on page 2-6

.

Do one of the following:

•

if the ground location will not be accessible — proceed to 

step 2

•

if the ground location will be accessible — mount the chassis in the 
desired installation location, using the installed brackets and customer 
supplied mounting hardware. See 

“Installing the Mounting Brackets for a 

19-inch Frame Installation” on page 2-18

 for detailed instructions.

Note:  

The 3916 comes with the brackets required for mounting in a 19-inch 

frame. A 23-inch frame mounting option is available but requires separately 
orderable brackets. The mounting instructions for both bracket sizes are the 
same.

Route the supplemental ground cable through the cabinet or installation site.

Insert the ground wire into the customer supplied ground lug. Using a ratchet 
crimper, crimp the ground lug.

Note:  

The ground lug should be a 2 hole lug @ 5//8 centers and with hole 

size for #10 or 1/4” screw.
