A coolant is added at the factory that as-
sures protection against freezing and
corrosion.
The coolant is a mixture of water and a
corrosion inhibitor/antifreeze. Within
the cooling system, the corrosion inhibi-
tor/antifreeze ensures
corrosion protection
freeze protection
higher boiling point
To protect against corrosion and raise the
boiling point, the coolant must remain in
the cooling system all year round – even
in countries with high outside tempera-
tures.
Check the corrosion inhibitor/antifreeze
concentration in the coolant at every
maintenance service.
The coolant must be replaced after
15
years/max. 180,000 miles (288,000
km)
.
Thereafter the coolant must be replaced
every 5 years/max. 90,000 miles
(144,000 km)
.
For notes on capacities, see the
Techni-
cal Data
section of the Owner's Manual.
To avoid damage to the cooling system,
only use an approved corrosion inhibi-
tor/antifreeze.
When the coolant is replaced, it should
contain a concentration of 50% by vol-
ume of corrosion inhibitor/antifreeze.
This provides freeze protection down to
-37 †.
Do not exceed a concentration of 55% by
volume (freeze protection down to ap-
prox. -45 †), as otherwise the heat dissi-
pation properties deteriorate.
If coolant is lost, do not refill with water
alone; also add a proportionate amount
of corrosion inhibitor/antifreeze.
