VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER A N D
R ATING PLATE
A combination veh icle iden tification number and rating
plate used on a ll m odels (fig . 1) is located on the le ft
door hinge p illa r o f Conventional, T ilt Cab and Forw ard
C on trol m odels, on the upper le ft hand side o f dash
panel on Cowl m odels and on the s teerin g column of
F o rw a rd C ontrol m odels. A ls o , included on the plate
is a space (DD) fo r indicating the date the truck was
d e liv e re d to the custom er.
A typ ical ve h ic le iden tification number w ill decode
as fo llo w s:
CS140P800025 (See S e ries and M odel Identification).
CS14 S e rie s and m odel iden tification , without
second, third and fourth numbers.
0 L a st number of m odel y e a r 1970.
P A ssem b ly plant, P = Pontiac.
100025 Twenty fifth veh icle built at that plant.
Unit numbering starts at 100001 at a ll
plants.
ENGINE NUMBER
The engine number indicates manufacturing plant,
month and day o f manufacture, and tran sm ission type. A
typ ica l engine number would be F1210FA, which would
breakdown thus:

UNIT A N D SERIAL NUMBER LOCATIONS
F o r the convenience o f s e r v ic e technicians and en gi­
n eers when w ritin g up certain business papers such as
W arranty R eports, Produ ct Inform ation R eports, o r r e ­
p ortin g product fa ilu res in any way, the location o f the
va riou s unit numbers have been indicated. These unit
numbers and th eir p r e fix o r su ffix are n ecessa ry on these
papers fo r variou s reasons - such as accounting, fo llo w -
up on production, etc.
The p re fix e s on certain units iden tify the plant in
which the unit was manufactured and thereby p erm its
p ro p e r follow -u p o f the plant in volved to get correctio n s
made when necessary.
A lw ays include the p r e fix in the number.
