TEST PROCEDURE 1: CONTINUITY
TEST FOR OPEN CIRCUITS
Do this test if:
•
Electrical components such as lamps, blowers,
or motors do not function.
•
Y
ou suspect a particular wire or ground has
failed.
•
Directed to by a troubleshooting chart.
Do the test at the circuit you believe is causing the
problem.
1. Key switch OFF.
NOTE: You may also need to disconnect the battery
or pull fuses if it is specified for the circuit you are test-
ing to prevent damage to your test equipment.
2. Set the Function/Range switch on your test me-
ter to measure resistance (Ohms) and measure
the resistance in the circuit as shown. If you do
not know the magnitude of resistance, set the
switch to the highest range and reduce until you
get a satisfactory reading.
Place the red lead, 1, on a pin in one of the con-
nectors. Place the black lead, 2, on the same pin
number in the opposite connector.
3. Determine if the measured resistance falls within
the guidelines specified in the procedure. If no
specification is given, use the following guides:
•
If the resistance is less than 1 ohm, the circuit
is continuous and is ok.
•
Higher than normal resistance usually indi-
cates dirty or corroded terminals in the con-
nectors or additional components in the cir-
cuit.
•
A reading of more than 100K ohms indicates
an open circuit meaning there is a break in
the wire.
