SAFETY CONSIDERATIONS
Installation and servicing of air-conditioning equipment can
be hazardous due to system pressure and electrical compo-
nents. Only trained and qualified service personnel should in-
stall, repair, or service air-conditioning equipment.
Untrained personnel can perform basic maintenance func-
tions such as changing bulbs. All other operations should be
performed by trained service personnel. When working on air-
conditioning equipment, observe precautions in the literature,
tags and labels attached to the unit or accessory, and other safe-
ty precautions that may apply.
Follow all safety codes. Wear safety glasses and work
gloves.
GENERAL
Carrier’s commercial rooftop ultra-violet germicidal lamps
are designed to kill odor causing mold and fungus that may de-
velop in the wet evaporator section of an HVAC unit. The high
output, low temperature germicidal lamps are installed in the
evaporator section of the HVAC unit, and are pointed directly
at the evaporator coil and condensate pan. The short wave
length ultra-violet band light inhibits and kills mold, fungus,
and microbial growth.
The Carrier germicidal lamps have been specifically de-
signed and optimized for 40 to 45 F, high-humidity operation in
a moving airstream inside an HVAC unit. The Carrier germi-
cidal lamps have output ratings at 45 F in a 400 fpm airflow of
120 microwatts/cm
2
at a 1 meter range.
PACKAGE USAGE
Before installing accessory or performing maintenance or
service on accessory, turn off main power switch to unit.
Electrical shock can cause injury or death. There may be
more than one disconnect switch.
Never expose eyes or skin to ultra-violet light from any
source. After installation, provide an interlock to turn off
germicidal lamps when access door is opened. Lamp must
be off before entering HVAC unit to perform maintenance
or service. Personal injury may result.
Use only specified high-output, low temperature bulbs with
this accessory. Use of a lower wattage or incorrect bulb can
result in damage to accessory or bulb. Correct bulbs have a
blue end cap.
Do not touch emitter glass without gloves. Damage to bulb
may result. Oil from fingerprints will permanently etch
glass of bulb and weaken structure. Clean bulb after
handling.
Bulb contains a small quantity of mercury. If a bulb breaks,
clean and dispose with care.
