Q. What is Kyuanos? What is the Kyuanos technology for?
Kyuanos is a general-purpose color management technology developed by Canon.
Each output device produces colors in a distinctive way; even colors of the same print job may
look different when printed on multiple devices because of individual variation among devices.
Kyuanos is an approach to color management that adjusts differences in color performance
among input and output devices (such as digital cameras, scanners, monitors, and printers);
managing it based on how the results of input or output are used.
Q. What is the origin of “Kyuanos”?
Kyuanos is a name coined by Canon, derived from the Greek word
kyanos meaning azure (or sky
blue), for a jewel sparking with thousands of colors.
Q. Describe the features of Kyuanos.
This technology serves many roles. In contrast to conventional technology of a similar nature,
Kyuanos facilitates creation of data tables for adjustment of the color reproduction characteristics
of individual input and output devices. (These profiles are different from ICC profiles in format
and content; they are based on colorimetric data.) The technology supports greater bit depth and
an extended color space, enabling richer color expression. In addition, it adjusts ambient lighting
conditions, which may otherwise cause colors to appear different.
Ambient Light Adjustment of iPF8000S and iPF9000S has been realized based on the Ambient
Light Adjustment feature, which is one of the above Kyuanos features.
Q. What is the background to the utilization of Kyuanos for Microsoft Windows Vista?
Image processing and color management technologies of Canon were highly-evaluated when
Microsoft Corporation was aiming at functional enhancement in color management system
technology with Windows Vista, targeting at the high-end market such as graphic arts and
printing industries. And then, they decided to utilize the Kyuanos technology of Canon for
Windows Vista.
