FIGURE 10-1. CRVW3 Radio Network and Base Station Operation
Only one base station is configured and used per radio network. It forms the
link between all devices on the network and any involved devices situated
outside the network.
The fundamental parts of a base station are a radio that can communicate with
the CRVW3 stations (RF450, RF451, or RF407) and the means to
communicate outward to other devices. A base station can use a variety of
communications media for its outward facing connection — wired connections
(serial cable, phone modem, TCP/IP, RS-485), or another radio connection that
is different from the kind used by the CRVW3 stations (cell modem, WiFi,
VHF narrow-band, satellite, Bluetooth).
Plan carefully how the base station will communicate with the
LoggerNet
computer. Sometimes the
LoggerNet
computer and the base station can be at
the same location (forming a single station), and only a serial cable is used to
establish the connection between them. In other scenarios, a communication
device (such as an NL201 with a TCP/IP link) enables communications to
travel from the base radio outward to the
LoggerNet
computer at a remote
location.
