Installing and Maintaining a DAS 150
Replacing or adding a disk module
If you are replacing a failed module, start with the next section, “Removing a disk
module.” If you are adding an optional module, skip to the “Installing a disk module”
section (page 4–6).
Removing a disk module
You can replace a failed disk module while the storage system is powered up. If
necessary, you can also replace a disk module that has not failed, such as a module
that has reported many “soft” errors. When replacing a module that
has not
failed,
you must replace the module while the storage system is powered up so that the SP
knows the module is being replaced.
CAUTION
Before replacing a disk module, verify that the suspected module has actually failed
by examining the module fault light. If you remove the
wrong
disk module, you
introduce an additional fault that shuts down the LUN containing the failed module.
In this situation, the operating system software cannot access the LUN until you
initialize it again.
Never entirely remove a disk module until you are ready to install a replacement
module or a disk filler module (page 4–7). If you remove a module, the open slot
may prevent proper cooling.
The disk modules in the top three slots (A0, B0, A1) contain factory-installed Licensed
Internal Code. Never remove more than one of these disk modules at one time. If you
must remove more than one of these disk modules, either refer to the storage system’s
configuring and managing manual or contact your server provider for the correct
procedure.
A failed module left in place may cause annoying error messages. If you do not plan
to replace a failed module immediately, you can grasp the faulty module by its handle
and withdraw it about 1 cm (0.5 in) from its slot to eliminate the error messages.

To remove a disk module
1. Locate the disk module that you want to remove (page 4–1).
2. Attach the clip of the ESD wristband (strap) to the inner chassis of the storage
system, and put the wristband around your wrist with the metal button against
your skin.
