Power Supply
The following procedures describe the removal, replacement, and installation of the power supply. This
system can have up to two power supplies. The system power can remain on under the following
conditions:
v
When installing a second power supply.
v
When one of two power supplies present in the system is replaced.
Before performing the following procedures, read the “Safety Notices” on page vii.
Use one of the following proceedures to remove, replace, or install a power supply:
v
If you are installing an option that requires removal of the power supplies, go to “Removing a Power
Supply with the System Power Off”.
v
If you are replacing the primary power supply, and it is the only power supply present in the system, go
to “Removing a Power Supply with the System Power Off”.
v
If you are installing a second power supply, or replacing one of two power supplies present in the
system, go to “Installing or Replacing a Power Supply with the System Power On” on page 68.

Power Supply LEDs
The power supply has three LEDs; two green LEDs (ac power good and dc power good), and one amber
LED, which indicate the power supply status. If both of the green LEDs are on solid (not blinking) and the
amber LED is off, then the power supply is operating correctly. If the ac power good LED is on, the dc
power good LED is blinking, and the amber LED is off, then the system is turned off, but the power supply
is still connected to the power source. If the amber LED is active, then the power supply is not operating
correctly.
Removing a Power Supply with the System Power Off
Before performing the following procedure, read and understand all of the safety notices beginning with
“Safety Notices” on page vii.
To remove a power supply with the system power off, do the following:
1. Stop the system as described in “Stopping the System” on page 9.
2. Place the system into the service position as described in “Placing the 296/C3 into the Service
Position” on page 6 or “Placing the 296/E3 into the Service and Operating Position” on page 7.
3. On a 296/C3, open the rear rack door.
4. Remove the service access cover as described in “Removing the 296/C3 Service Access Cover” on
page 12 or “Removing the 296/E3 Service Access Cover” on page 13.
5. Remove the power cable from the rear of the power supply you want to remove.
6. Wait at least 10 seconds before performing the next step.
7. Grasp the ends of the power supply handles, and press the retractable spring-activated portion of each
handle. This action releases the spring latch located on the bottom side of each handle. See the
following illustration.
