CryoProbe Prodigy Safety
The Prodigy system is an accessory for an NMR-spectrometer and consists of a CryoProbe
Prodigy, a vacuum-insulated transfer line for liquid nitrogen, a dewar for liquid nitrogen (LN2
Dewar) with a permanent installed dewar adaptor and a Prodigy Unit for the control of the
CryoProbe Prodigy.
The CryoProbe Prodigy is a NMR probe with integrated Cryo-preamplifiers. The NMR coil
assembly and the Cryo-preamplifier are cooled by evaporation of liquid nitro-gen (LN2). The
advantage of this cooling method is to achieve extremely efficient operation of the NMR coil
assembly and to significantly reduce thermal noise. These combined efforts drastically
enhance the overall signal-to-noise ratio compared to room temperature NMR
measurements.
LN2 is transferred to the probe from the LN2 Dewar via the LN2 transfer line. The CryoProbe
is an open system, meaning that gaseous nitrogen is discharged into the atmosphere through
an exhaust on the probe. A special exhaust heater is used to heat up and evaporate any
excess LN2 droplets at the exhaust. The cold parts inside the probe are thermally insulated
by vacuum, which is evacuated by a roughing and turbo pump located in the Prodigy Unit.
For additional Prodigy safety and related information, refer to the CryoProbe Prodigy System
User Manual (P/N Z31986), available on the BASH DVD or from Bruker.
As the CryoProbe Prodigy system is used in conjunction with a magnet system, also refer to

Personnel Safety Issues
All persons who work with or in the close vicinity of an NMR system must be informed about
its safety issues and emergency procedures.
If in doubt: Wear goggles and protective gloves, particularly when handling samples!
Inherent Safety
An NMR system, including its components, is designed for inherent safety. Pressure relief
valves, sensors, and error handling in hardware and software have been included to protect
the operator, equipment, and environment.
Technically Qualified Personnel Only
Only persons with a basic technical understanding of electricity, pressurized gas systems,
and cryogens should operate and maintain an NMR system. User interface, system
messages, and manuals require a good understanding of the English language.
No User-serviceable Parts Inside
There are no user-serviceable parts inside a probe/CryoProbe. Do not open these devices.
