Preparing to Install the BT-211
The BlueTraks BT-211 is a simple installation that can be
performed by a professional or a do-it-yourself installer
in a short time. To save time and confusion, we recom-
mend advance planning for the following parts of the
installation.
Existing Radio Unit
The BT-211 uses RCA connectors to supply the iPod audio-
out to the radio system. This means the vehicle radio
would already need to be equipped with RCA audio
inputs which are not common in most factory radios but
very common in most aftermarket replacement radios.
Most new cars now feature an AUX-IN mini plug adapter
either on the radio or located somewhere on the dash-
board. This allows portable music players to be plugged
in and played through the radio system. In this case, the
BT-211 would also use this AUX-IN connector for the audio
input. A special adapter may be required to use this
AUX-IN port.
If the vehicle radio has neither RCA inputs or an AUX-IN
input, an audio input interface device will be required.
The vehicle radio must have either an existing separate
CD changer located away from the radio or be pre-wired
to add a CD changer.
Many third-party CD changer interface devices exist that
provide high quality sound playback. This is because the
CD changer interface device plugs into the CD changer
control cable routed usually from the trunk to the dash-
board radio location. When operating the BT-211 to
play iPod music, the CD changer mode will need to be
selected on the vehicle radio in order to hear sound.
Hands-Free Speaker
The BT-211 uses a hands-free speaker to provide sound
output for telephone calls and for the navigation sound
playback. The BT-211 uses a 1/8” mini plug to connect
this hands free speaker to the unit.
The hands free speaker does not need to be a pow-
ered speaker as the BT-211 provides amplifi cation to the
speaker.
For some installers, it may be possible to use an existing
speaker in the vehicle if there was a factory hands free
system already installed.
iPod Cable
The supplied iPod cable is designed to be routed to a lo-
cation such as the inside of the glove box or an enclosed
area such as the center arm rest console. Other locations
may be more convenient as well. Choose an area that
the cable will stay clean and the iPod will be secure while
the vehicle is in motion.

Microphone
The BT-211 uses a microphone to provide sound input
during hands-free telephone calls. A specialized micro-
phone is supplied with the BT-211. A suitable mounting
location would be required near the driver. An 1/8” mini
to mini extension cable is included and may be required
depending on the distance to the BT-211 mounting.
Some vehicles may already have a microphone built into
the vehicle. These are usually found near the sunroof
controls or near the sun visors. Using the factory installed
microphone is suggested because of the hidden look
and the sound quality may be superior to an aftermarket
surface mount microphone.
Mounting Location
Proper planning for the mounting location of the BT-211
is important. The unit should be located in an avail-
able space of the vehicle dashboard or lower console
area. Areas such as storage compartments and unused
ashtrays for example are creative mounting locations.
Modifi cation of these areas may be required in order to
provide clearance for the BT-211 and rear wiring.
BlueTraks supplies an ABS black plastic panel designed to
be trimmed to fi t a fl at opening. The BT-211 simply presses
into the opening and is held in place with corner housing
pins. No brackets are required to support the BT-211 into
the mounting.
Some vehicles may require a more custom mounting solu-
tion. Openings might exist that may be a unique shape or
a different angle is desired. In this case, installers with ex-
perience in custom fabrication may be able to produce
a mounting bracket using materials such as aluminum.
The BT-211 is not designed to be windshield mounted or
on the top surface of the dashboard or held in place with
any other type of mounting. Use caution when choosing
a mounting so the unit is fi xed and secured to its location.
GPS Navigator
The optional GPS-211 Navigator unit is separate from the
BT-211 main unit. The GPS unit may be mounted in the
trunk, under the dashboard or in the glove box. Choose
a mounting location that allows easy access to the map
SD card for navigation software updates.
Choosing a suitable mounting location for the supplied
GPS surface mount antenna is critical. This antenna is de-
signed to be mounted on the roof or trunk of the vehicle
for best reception. Sometimes mounting the antenna
inside the vehicle such as directly behind the windshield
can produce satisfactory results as well.
Noise
Automobile electrical noise from the vehicle’s altenator
or starter may be heard after installing the BT-211. In this
case, using a 12V DC noise fi lter may solve this problem.
