Recording with Model 1694
The projector is supplied with all necessary accessories for making a recording on 16mm striped
film. This is film which carries a full-width or half-width magnetic coating over the area (opposite
to the sprocket holes) normally occupied by the optical sound track and on that surface of the film
which, in the picture gate, is nearest to the lamp. The recordings can be reproduced on the 1694
itself, on the 1644. 1653.1 654,1 658, 1693 and 1698, on earlier Bell & Howell Filmosound
projectors designed for magnetic stripe, and on any other magnetic stripe projector complying
with international standards. The best sound quality is obtained on full-width stripe, which you
are recommended to use for your recordings unless you need either of the two special facilities
provided by half-width stripe. One of these facilities, based on the fact that a half-width stripe
leaves half of an existing optical track still usable, is to have a choice of two different sound tracks
on the same film - the producer's original recording on the optical half and your own recording on
the magnetic half. Subsequently, you can project whichever track you choose just by setting the
projector's sound track selector switch to the optical playback position or magnetic playback
position. The other facility also offers you a choice of two different sound tracks but, this time,
both magnetically recorded. As accessories, Bell & Howell can supply two alternative "half-track"
magnetic heads, differing from one another in that one records on the outer half of the sound
track area and the other on the inner half. Using each of these heads in turn, with a film carrying a
full-width stripe, you can record two different magnetic tracks, side by side, and subsequently -
depending on which head you fit before your performance - reproduce either of them.
Alternatively, complex tracks can be built up by recording with each kind of half-track accessory
head in turn but using the full-track head supplied with the projector to reproduce the pair of
them at the same time. Recordings can be made at either of the two standard projector speeds.
18 or 24 frames per second, but must of course be reproduced at the speed used to record them.
For the finest quality. 24 fps should be used.
