202 Chapter 14
Clean the scanner, including the keyboard panel, after every examination:
1
Use a soft cloth moistened with a mild detergent or a disinfectant. Disinfectants
that the scanner can withstand are listed in Appendix C, “Specifications”.
2
Wipe dry with a lint-free cloth.
3
You can remove the holders for transducers and scanning gel from the scanner
to clean them. The trackball can also be removed for cleaning. See page 54 for
instructions on using the trackball tool (QA0228) to loosen the trackball.
Although the scanner surface is resistant to many chemicals, strong chemicals may
discolor it.
Palm Control Unit (PCU)
You must wear gloves during all stages of cleaning.
To clean the PCU:
1
Make sure that the PCU is at room temperature.
2
Remove the CIV-Flex
TM
sheath from the PCU.
3
Immediately rinse off any visible contamination (such as biological substances)
with a detergent and tap water at a maximum temperature of 40° C (104°F),
using a brush if necessary. Keep the bioburden
1
at a minimum.
Caution: Keep all plugs and sockets absolutely dry at all times.
Transducers and Puncture Attachments
Please refer to the General Transducer Information (BB0555) manual for
instructions for cleaning transducers and puncture attachments.
Disinfection
For disinfecting ultrasound equipment, B-K Medical recommends the methods listed
in Appendix C, “Specifications”, but follow local government rules and guidelines at
all times.
Palm Control Unit (PCU)
Various methods can be used to disinfect the PCU. For some methods, the PCU plug
must be covered as described below in “Immersion”. For some other methods, the
plug must not be covered. It is important to read the precautions for a method before
you use it.
Table 14-1 on page 204 contains an overview of the disinfection methods.
1. The bioburden of used instruments varies. Data are scarce, but it is suggested there is a low
bioburden after cleaning surgical instruments (98% of instruments have less than 10
2
living
organisms after cleaning) [1].
