Region Coding
In an attempt to control the distribution of video
discs, the DVD Forum has designated eight
different regions and the Blu-ray Disc Association
has designated three different regions throughout
the world. Discs from any given region are normally
only playable on players purchased from that same
region.
Resolution
Every video display device or video format has a
maximum number of
Pixels
that can be displayed.
This resolution is specified as the number of
horizontal pixels by the number of vertical pixels.
The resolution of a DVD is 720x480 for
NTSC
discs
and 720x576 for
PAL
discs.
Scaling
must be used to
convert this resolution to the resolution of a
Fixed
Pixel
display. The horizontal resolution of a
CRT
(i.e., analog) is somewhat ambiguous, as there are no
discrete pixels used in this technology.
Scaling
Scaling is the process of converting a video signal
from one
Resolution
to another. As with any type of
signal processing, care must be taken to ensure that
the signal is not degraded by the processing itself.
S/PDIF
The Sony/Philips Digital Interface Format is
commonly used to transmit digital audio
information from a source (such as a DVD player) to
a receiver (such as an audio processor). The
connectors used for S/PDIF are common RCA

UOP
Video disc formats allows the disc itself to send
commands to the player. A User Operation
Prohibition is a disc-based command that tells the
player to ignore commands issued by the user. For
