INTRODUCTION
The AVR-8F-B-P-ADB1A is a high performance, GPIB and RS232-equipped instrument
capable of generating up to +1000V at repetition rates up to 1 kHz into loads of 200Ω or
higher. Rise and fall times are fixed at less than 50 ns.
The minimum pulse width is 100 ns. The maximum pulse width depends on the load
resistance:
PW
MAX
= R
LOAD
× 10uF, up to a maximum of 1 second
The maximum duty cycle depends on the set amplitude and the load resistance:
DC
MAX
= 100% × (P
MAX
/ 1000V) ÷ (V
OUT
/ R
LOAD
), up to a maximum of 50%
P
MAX
is 5 Watts. The maximum average output power (P
MAX
) is only obtainable at
maximum amplitude.
For example, if the output amplitude is 1000V, and the load resistance is 5 kΩ, then the
limits are:
PW
MAX
= 5 kΩ × 10uF = 500 ms
DC
MAX
= 100% × (5W / 1000V) ÷ (1000V / 5 kΩ ) = 2.5%
If the amplitude is reduced to 500V, the maximum pulse width would be unchanged at
500 ms, but the maximum duty cycle would double to 5%.
To allow the instrument to safely enforce these operating limits, the user should set the
expected load resistance value using the front panel “Load” menu or the “output:load”
computer command.
The output impedance (R
OUT
, the internal resistance in series with the output) may be
set to zero or 50Ω (nominally). If the output impedance is set to 50Ω, some amplitude
will be lost across the internal resistance, due to the resistor divider effect.
The AVR-8F-B-P-ADB1A includes an internal trigger source, but it can also be triggered
or gated by an external source. A front-panel pushbutton can also be used to trigger the
instrument. The output pulse width can be set to follow an input trigger pulse width.
The AVR-8F-B-P-ADB1A features front panel keyboard and adjust knob control of the
output pulse parameters along with a four line by 40-character backlit LCD display of
the output amplitude, pulse width, pulse repetition frequency, and delay. The instrument
includes memory to store up to four complete instrument setups. The operator may use
the front panel or the computer interface to store a complete “snapshot” of all key
instrument settings, and recall this setup at a later time.
The instrument is protected against overload conditions (such as short circuits) by
several protective circuits. An internal power supply monitor removes the power to the
