Clean and Service the
Machine
Cleaning the machine at the end of a shift allows you to
discover and take care of small maintenance issues
while they are still minor, saving you future downtime
and parts costs.
To clean the machine:
1.
Clean all dust and debris from under, on, or around
the machine.
•
Start the maintenance air compressor, if
installed. You can use compressed air to blow
debris from hard-to-reach areas. For starting
instructions, see “Starting the Maintenance Air
Compressor” on page 90.
Always wear eye protection when using com-
pressed air.
•
Pay special attention to the turbocharger, the
exhaust system, and the bearing housings. Dirt
buildup can insulate bearings, reducing their
ability to shed heat.
•
Clean thoroughly to prevent buildup of combus-
tible materials, such as material fines and spills.
These can fuel a fire or even ignite a fire if oil-
based products have been spilled onto the
machine, the soil, or the processed materials in
the area.
•
Remove material buildup from the track shoes
and undercarriage components. Soil and debris
that has packed the undercarriage increases the
load on track components and contributes to a
shorter track life.
2.
Inspect the machine as described in “Inspecting
After Shutdown”.
3.
Lock up and secure the machine as described in
“Securing the Machine” on page 90.
Inspecting After Shutdown
To inspect the machine after shutdown:
1.
Check for the following conditions:
•
Leaks
•
Overheated bearings
•
Combustible material on a hot engine, in
exhaust areas, or on other parts
•
Loose material lying on the conveyor belt, on
the feed chain, or in the hopper
•
Worn conveyor belt: frayed edges, holes, or torn
areas
•
Worn skirt rubber
•
Wear on the machine from the conveyor belt
rubbing. As needed to prevent further wear, add
a fish plate made of abrasion resistant material.
•
Fire hazards. See “Fire Prevention and Suppres-
sion” on page 44.
•
Damaged or missing guards, safety devices, or
decals
•
Conditions that can cause downtime or delays at
the next start up
2.
Do the checks listed under “Inspecting the Machine
During Periodic Daily Shutdowns” on page 77.
3.
Perform or request any needed maintenance.
4.
Return the air compressor unit to its stowed posi-
tion.
5.
Note conditions of the machine for the maintenance
log if your company keeps such a log.
6.
Lock up and secure the machine as described in
“Securing the Machine”.
