5.5.  Measuring the Density of a Solid 

 

 

The density of a solid is obtained by averaging the measured values. 

 

1. Start 

the 

measurement when water temperature 

becomes stable. 

 
2.  Press the RE-ZERO key to set the displayed 

value to zero. 

 
3.  Place the sample on the upper pan and record 

its weight in air (A). 

 
4.  Press the RE-ZERO key to set the displayed 

value to zero. 

 
5.  Place the sample on the lower pan and record 

its weight in water (B). At this time, ignore the 
minus sign. 

Note: Make sure that the sample is about 10 

mm below the surface of the liquid. 

 
6.  Obtain the density of water according to the 

temperature. (Refer to Table 1.)

At sea level (1 atmosphere), the density of water reaches maximum at 3.98°C.
