Amana Compact Washer
TESTING COMPONENT
For Service Technician Use Only
TEST #7: Out of Balance Switch
The Off Balance Switch is a “normally closed” switch. When
the tub is off balance it will hit the arm of the switch, which
is adjacent to the tub, causing the switch to open. If the tub
strikes the switch several times it will automatically stop the
Spin cycle, turn on the water valve and perform a rinse and
agitation for 2 minutes in an attempt to rebalance the load.
If the above procedure is performed twice without balancing
itself, it will generate an “
E3
” - Abnormal Spin error and the
buzzer will sound to indicate a problem.
¾
Open the Wash Lid and rearrange the clothes evenly
around the Wash/Spin Tub.
¾
Close the Wash Lid and press the START/PAUSE button
again.
NOTE
: In a Spin Only cycle, the error code will appear the first
time the tub strikes the switch.
This test checks the washer Off-Balance Switch and switch
arm.
1. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
2. Verify that the washer is level--adjust feet if necessary.
3. Remove water valve access panel (located behind the lid).
Remove switch cover.
4. Disconnect one of the terminals from the Out of Balance
Switch. Attach the leads of an ohmmeter across the switch
terminals.
The switch is “normally closed” and the ohmmeter should
show continuity across the switch terminals.
¾
If there is continuity, reconnect the terminal and
continue to step 5.
¾
If there is no continuity, replace the switch and retest.
5. Next, off-set the tub until it contacts the switch arm -- a
click should be heard and the ohm-meter should read
open as long as the switch is tripped.
¾
If the ohmmeter shows open while the switch is
tripped, the switch is working correctly. Reconnect the
switch harness and continue to step 6.
¾
If the ohmmeter shows anything but open, replace the
switch assembly and retest.
¾
If the switch does not trip, or trips too quickly, remove
the rear panel and inspect the switch arm. It should
drop straight down from the switch and approximately
parallel to the tub. If not, adjust the arm as necessary.
6. Access the UI/Control Board.
7. Disconnect
CN8
from the control board and attach the
leads of an ohmmeter across the connector, pins 1 and 2.
¾
If there is continuity, the harness is good. Continue to
step 8.
¾
If the reading shows open, repair or replace the switch
harness and retest.
8. If the Out of Balance Switch is still not working as
expected, replace the UI/Control Board.
a. Unplug washer or disconnect power.
b. Replace the UI/Control Board.
c. Reassemble all parts and panels and retest.
WARNING
Electrical Shock Hazard

Failure to do so can result in death or
electrical shock.
