RFC 1483 - RFC 1483 SubNetwork Access Protocol (SNAP) is a standard method
for encapsulating multiprotocol data into frames for ATM (OSI Layer 5) networks. It
is one of many RFC “link protocols” that define how different devices communicate
with each other across networks and assure “interoperability”.
RIP - Routing Information Protocol helps keep routing tables current so that IP
traffic passes efficiently from source to destination.
RJ-11 - This is the common telephone-industry connector containing 6 pins, but
only 2 are used.
RJ-14 - This telephone-industry connector has the same appearance as a RJ-11, but
its 6 pins have different wiring.
RJ-45 - This is a telephone-industry standard connector containing 8 pins.
router - A router is a network device that forwards packets from one network to
another based on IP addresses. Routers use one or more algorithms from routing
tables to determine the optimal path along which data should be forwarded. Routers
are occasionally called gateways, but traditional gateways do not translate IP
addresses.
SNMP - Simple Network Management Protocol is used for communication between
management consoles and network devices. It provides a means to manage
configurations, statistics collection, performance, and security. SNMP2 supports
centralized as well as distributed network management strategies.
spoofing - This refers to a packet claiming to be from an address from which it was
not actually sent. Illegal hacker acts of spoofing are designed to foil network security
mechanisms such as filters and access lists.
