Converter cold start
A typical cold start sequence is described below.
■
First start in a commissioning
Before the converter is energized for the first time, adjust the setting of thermostat T1 from
+15 °C to +60 °C (59 °F to 140 °F) to remove humidity from the auxiliary control cubicle
with fan heater E1. After the converter has been warmed up for one hour, change the setting
to +15 °C (59 °F).
After the converter control section is pre-heated, converter dry-out procedure (manual or
automatic) can be started. For details, see section
■
Normal start and start after blackout
When temperature of the thermostat T1 in the auxiliary control cubicle is below +15 °C
(59 °F):
•
There is no power supply for the control components in the auxiliary control cubicle.
•
The auxiliary control cubicle is heated with fan heater E1.
•
Heating request (relay K9.1) is ON: Turn the liquid heater and pump ON.
•
Converter modules are being heated with coolant circulation.
After converter control section is pre-heated, converter dry-out procedure (manual or
automatic) can be started. For details, see section
■
Cold start with cold climate kit
Converter can be equipped with optional cold climate kit in cold environments, in which
temperatures are lower than specified in the manual.
Cold climate version contains additional components, such as additional heaters and
thermostats. For detailed information, see the circuit diagrams delivered with the converter.
Converter dry-out
■
Manual dry-out
Most of the ACS880 wind turbine converters by ABB require manual dry-out before operating
them for the first time in commissioning, or after a longer standstill.
Manual dry-out means that the converter/turbine operator must evaluate the need of converter
dry-out based on the situation and the length of turbine standstill. Converter does not give
any indication of need for dry-out.
Basic principle of the manual dry-out procedure is to remove humidity inside the converter
by circulating warm coolant through the converter for a pre-defined time. Required coolant
temperature is related to the ambient temperature, and required warm-up duration is related
to the length of standstill time.
Required dry-out durations are presented below.
Dry-out time
Dry-out type
24 h
Commissioning of a new turbine
12 h
Re-start of a turbine following a period of isolation exceeding 48 hours
