Checking the Prototype
Scan the entire surface of your first finished prototype. If your product has
a metal enclosure, pay special attention to openings, areas around buttons,
LEDs, LCDs, connectors or vents. If the enclosure is made of plastic, it is
essentially transparent to electromagnetic emissions. Connect all cables
which are normally connected to the device and attach all the specified
peripherals (i.e. printers, monitors). Scan the full length of each cable.
Before the EMC Test
Perform the complete scan as described above. Make sure that you identify
the hot spots. Prepare remedies to take with you to the compliance lab (i.e.
shielding materials) in case your product has trouble passing. Don’t forget to
take your 3M
™
ScanEM-C Electromagnetic Near-Field Probes with you.
Should Things Go Wrong
Knowledge of where the EMI hot spots are is your most powerful tool in
countering excessive emission levels.
Seeking Help
If you are unable to reduce emission levels to the specified standards and
your product fails its compliance test, you may want to seek professional
help. There are many qualified consultants and laboratories that are prepared
to assist you by providing guidance and knowledge in solving the emission
problems of your product.
