Alarms can be set to notify the network manager when a particular
parameter is at an unacceptable level. Alarms operate on the contents
of a counter or set of counters. A manager can assign one of a set of
actions to be taken automatically if an alarm is triggered. For example,
the action may temporarily turn off a port during a broadcast storm
and send a trap to a management station.
Event Handling
Traps are sent to network management stations selected by the
network manager. A trap is a frame containing information that a
particular event has occurred.
Methods of Managing the MSH
When the management module is installed in the MSH chassis, various
methods of management are available:
■
Over the network with SNMP or Telnet.
■
Using SLIP through a local or remote SNMP station.
■
Using a local or remote VT100 terminal with RS232 link.
Remote operation is over a modem link to the RS232 port.
You may look at the configuration of the chassis and modules using the
MSH Display Panel. The management module can support up to five
management user sessions at the same time. These may be from the
display panel, SLIP or Telnet.
You must have a VT100 terminal (or a PC emulating VT100) or BootP
server available to set the IP address and manage the MSH hub.
Access Levels
The MSH management facility allows the network administrator to
implement different levels of security. The level of security determines
the access each user has to manage the hub through the Management
Information Base (MIB). The levels have been set up to enable a future
migration to SNMP 2. The access rights of even-numbered levels have
been defined as those of the next lower level. Thus, in this product, the
