Wie schon der namensgleiche Ferrari Superamerica aus den Jahren 1956 bis 1961
erscheint auch der außergewöhnliche, seit 2005 erhältliche Straßensportwagen in limi-
tierter Auflage, wobei der aktuelle Ferrari aber auf 559 Exemplare begrenzt ist. Diese
offene Variante des 575M Maranello kombiniert in bisher nicht da gewesener Art einen
leistungsstarken 12-Zylinder-Motor mit einem außergewöhnlich vielseitigen Cabriolet.
Weltweit erstmalig wurde in einem Serienfahrzeug ein bis dato unbekanntes
Dachkonzept umgesetzt, wobei elektrochromatische Technik (= Umfärbung mittels
elektronischer Regelung) in einer knapp 1 m
2 großen Glasfläche zum Einsatz kommt.
Dieses Revocromico-Dach ist durch die seitlichen, abfallenden Streben, die an Formen
historischer Ferrari-Modelle erinnern und die Funktion von Rollbars übernehmen, mit
der Karosserie des Superamerica harmonisch verbunden. Das robuste Kristalldach wird
mittels eines Motors um die eigene Achse gedreht, das in weniger als 10 Sekunden
geöffnet werden kann, und das Fahrzeug vom Coupé in ein Cabriolet verwandelt. Der
Superamerica bietet somit zugleich die Vorteile eines reinrassigen Coupés als auch eines
offenen Sportwagens. Das geöffnete Dach liegt dabei festjustiert auf der hinteren, per-
fekt abgestimmten Fahrzeugabdeckung. Der besondere Clou: im Kristallglas des
Daches befinden sich elektrochemische Zellen, dessen Elektroden im Inneren des mehr-
schichtigen Glases mittels unterschiedlich starker Aufladung den Zustand der verarbei-
teten Materialien verändern. Der Fahrer kann somit je nach Wunsch die
Lichtdurchlässigkeit des elektrochromatischen Glases ändern, von der Transparenz eines
herkömmlichen Glasdaches bis hin zu einer Verdunkelung, die nur noch ein Prozent des
Sonnenlichts durchlässt.
Das sehr harmonische Design oblag, wie üblich, dem Designstudio Pininfarina, das dem
neuartigen Dachkonzept perfekt Rechnung trug. Im Heckbereich gelang es, die musku-
lösen, gleichzeitig aber auch sanften Formen effektvoll zu betonen. An der Front domi-
nieren die neu gestalteten Lichter und der prägnante Lufteinlass auf der Motorhaube
die Silhouette des Wagens. Die Exklusivität setzt sich auch im Inneren des Wagens fort,
wo die gewohnt makellose Verarbeitung und das hochwertige Leder überzeugen. Die
bedienungsfreundliche Anordnung der Instrumente sowie das großzügige
Raumangebot spricht ebenfalls für sich. Formel-1-Technik findet sich im Superamerica
ebenfalls wieder, so unter anderem bei der wahlweise erhältlichen F1-Schaltung. Durch
Knopfdruck kann dabei zwischen dem manuellen und dem automatischen Schaltmodus
gewechselt werden. Ebenfalls per Knopfdruck kann das Getriebe auf den Fahrstil
„Normal“ oder „Sport“ angewählt werden. Ferner stehen dem Fahrer zwei Alternativen
für die Dämpfungskontrolle zur Verfügung, wobei, in Zusammenarbeit mit diversen
Sensoren, ein sportliches oder komfortables Fahrverhalten bestimmt wird. Das
Herzstück des Wagens, der 12-Zylinder-Motor, leistet 540 PS bei 7.250 U/min und somit
25 PS mehr als der 575M Maranello. Diese Steigerung erklärt sich durch einige
Modifikationen an dem potenten Triebwerk mit rund 5750 ccm Hubraum, der den
schon jetzt ausverkauften Straßensportwagen in nur 4,25 Sekunden von 0 auf 100
Stundenkilometern katapultiert und den Superamerica mit 320 km/h zum schnellsten
Cabriolet der Welt macht.
As was the case with the Ferrari Superamerica that appeared from 1956 to 1961, this
unusual convertible sports car of the same name has been available since 2005 in a limi-
ted edition, which for the current Ferrari is limited to 559. This open-topped variant of
the 575M Maranello combines in a fashion that has not existed before a powerful 12-
cylinder engine with an unusually versatile convertible. This was the first time anywhe-
re in the world that a previously unknown roof concept had been used in a production
car, that of electrochromic technology (= electronically controlled colour change) which
is used in just a 1 m
2 area of glass. This “Revocromico” roof is harmoniously connected
to the bodywork of the Superamerica by struts that slope away at the sides and per-
form the function of a roll bar, thus calling to mind the shapes of historic Ferrari models.
The robust glass roof has a motor that rotates it on its own axis and can be opened in
less than 10 seconds to convert the car from a coupé to a cabriolet. The Superamerica
therefore offers the advantages of both a thoroughbred coupé and an open-topped
sports car. When open the glass roof fits perfectly into a well in the rear deck of the
vehicle top. The key: embedded in the crystal glass of the roof are electrochemical cells,
the electrodes of which inside the laminated layers of the glass react to the load to
change the condition of the treated materials. The driver can therefore alter the light
transmission through the electrochromic glass at will, from the transparency of a nor-
mal glass roof through to a tint level that lets through only a percentage of the sunlight.
This very harmonious design, as usual, came from the Pininfarina Design Studio, who
perfectly implemented this novel roof concept. In the rear they have succeeded in
accentuating the muscular but soft contours. The front silhouette of the car is domi-
nated by the redesigned lights and the striking air intake on the bonnet. Equal exclusi-
vity is also present in the interior with its usual uncompromising finish and top quality
leather. The user-friendliness of the controls and the spaciousness also speak for them-
selves. Formula 1 technology is also present in the Superamerica, for instance in the
optional F1 gearbox. It is possible to choose between manual and automatic mode at
the press of a button. Similarly the gears can be switched from “normal” to “sports”
mode. In addition the driver has two alternative damping controls, with various sensors
that enable a sporty or a comfortable drive to be selected. The core of the car, its 12-
cylinder engine, develops 540 bhp at 7,250 rpm, that is 25 bhp more than the 575M
Maranello. This increase is attributable to certain modifications to the powerful 5750 cc
engine, which catapults this sporty roadster, that has already been sold out, from 0 to
100 km/h in just 4.25 seconds, making the Superamerica at 320 km/h the fastest con-
vertible in the world.
