Quidway® NetEngine 80E Core Router

OC-192c/STM-64c RPR Optical Interface Board

Overview

The Quidway

®

NetEngine 80E core router (“NE80E” hereinafter) provides OC-192c/STM-64c RPR

optical interface boards for Resilient Packet Ring (RPR) networking. The boards can be plugged in

any service slots of the NE80E.

As an international standard used to establish IP ring networks, the RPR technology is a kind of

MAN networking technology that features high efficiency and high reliability. It has many

advantages over the previous ring network technologies. It provides 50ms protection switchover

and high reliability of the SDH network, and high bandwidth utilization of packet switching of the

Ethernet. Most importantly, it features low cost, simple implementation and good scalability. It is

currently one of the major technologies for IP MAN construction.

The RPR technology is mainly applied in the networks with high reliability requirements, good QoS

feature, bandwidth guarantee and bearer of multiple integrated service types. For example, it may

be applied in the backbone and access networks of IP MANs and in the dispersed government,

enterprise and campus networks.

CR52-RPR/STM64-XFP

The RPR boards are used in multiple NE80E routers or other NE routers to form a RPR ring

network. The RPR ring network is composed of an internal ring and an external ring. Currently, the

10G RPR board provided by the NE80E has only one external optical interface. At least two RPR

optical interface boards must be configured for each RPR ring: One board serves as the external

ring node, while the other board serves as the internal ring node. Therefore, RPR boards of an

even quantity must be configured for each NE80E router.
