Syslog Setup
46.1 Syslog Overview
This chapt er explains t he syslog scr eens.
The syslog pr ot ocol allow s devices t o send event not ificat ion m essages across an I P net w or k t o
syslog ser vers t hat collect t he event m essages. A syslog- enabled device can generat e a syslog
m essage and send it t o a syslog ser ver.
Sy slog is defined in RFC 3164. The RFC defines t he packet for m at , cont ent and syst em log r elat ed
infor m at ion of syslog m essages. Each syslog m essage has a facilit y and sever it y level. The syslog
facilit y ident ifies a file in t he syslog ser ver. Refer t o t he docum ent at ion of your syslog pr ogram for
det ails. The follow ing t able descr ibes t he syslog sever it y levels.
