BGP4+ Overview
multi-protocol extension, namely BGP4+, is specified to en-
able BGP4 to support such multiple network layer protocols as IPv6
and IPX.
To make BGP4 protocol support multiple network layer protocols
for routing, the following functions must be added to it.

Information newly added to BGP4 must make a specific net-
work layer protocol associated with the next hop information,
that is, the address of the next hop shall be indicated by a des-
ignated network layer protocol address.

BGP4 protocol shall be able to associate a specific protocol with
the Network Layer Reachable Information (
), and employ
address family to distinguish various network layer protocols.
This is a mechanism for transmission of the IPv6 routing infor-
mation by utilizing the attributes of MP_REACH_NLRI and MP_UN-
REACH_NLRI BGP defined by BGP4+. Similar to the common dis-
tance vector routing protocols, BGP4 protocol is usually indepen-
dent of the specific address family used by the protocol.
IPv6 protocol is a kind of BGP4-supported protocol. The funda-
mental difference between protocols of IPv6 and IPv4 routing in-
formation is that IPv6 introduces area-based unicast addresses
and defines the specific situations where specific address ranges
must be applied.
