Introduction to OSPFv3
IPv6 Open Shortest Path First (
) protocol reserves most of
IPv4 algorithms, that is, from IPv4 to IPv6, the essential OSPF
mechanism remains unchanged. OSPF protocol for IPv6 is OSPFv3
and that for IPv4 is OSPFv2. Both IPv6 and IPv4 contain link state
database. The Link State Advertisement (
) is contained in link
state database and link state databases of routers in the same
area .
Database synchronization is implemented through the database
exchange process, which includes exchanging database descrip-
tion packets, link state request packets and link state update
packets. The subsequent database synchronization is maintained
through flooding with link state update packets and link state
acknowledgment packets.
In the broadcast and Non-Broadcast Multicast Access (NBMA) net-
works, both IPv6 and IPv4 use the OSPF hello packet to discover
and maintain neighborhood relation, elect DR and BDR. IPv6 and
IPv4 also keep consistent with each other in such aspects as neigh-
bor determination, basic concept of inter-area routes, redistribu-
tion of Autonomous System (
) external routes and so on.

OSPFv2
There are differences between OSPFv3 and OSPFv2 because
OSPFv3 is based on IPv6.
