SCANNING SAMPLES
13. Prepare soil scanning area.
a. Remove any gross pieces of organic matter (e.g. bark, woodchip, straw) or foreign objects
(e.g. brick, stones, gravel, glass) from the soil surface to be scanned.
b. Firmly compress the soil surface to be scanned, so the surface is flat and firm using the
tamping tool provided in the kit (or a hand trowel).
c. If the soil surface to be scanned contains excessive moisture, air-dry the sample before
scanning. The TPH prediction is likely to be more accurate if the soil is dryer.
14. Enter the Sample ID into the PDA (up to 20 characters, please note “\”, “/” and “:” are not allowed).
15. Place the nose cone of the instrument in direct contact with the soil ensuring that the nose cone
face is flush against the soil surface. Use the weight of the instrument to hold the nose cone in
place – DO NOT push down on the instrument as this may cause a reading failure due to soil being
forced into the nose cone.
16. Press the trigger button once and release. A blue/green bar will appear to progress over 15
seconds and a TPH reading in mg/kg (C
10
-C
36/40
) will be displayed on the screen. You MUST hold
the instrument as still as possible during the scanning period.
If RemScan gives a reading greater than 1,000, clean the nose cone prior to next measurement to
avoid cross contamination onto the next sample.
17. To scan more soil samples repeat steps 12 to 15 above and follow the prompts on the screen.
DOWNLOADING DATA AND SWITCHING OFF
18. To switch off the PDA, firstly press the
“RemScan Program Exit Button”
on the screen. Once at
the home page, the Bluetooth connectivity automatically switches off then the screen should then
switch off.
19. Once the PDA is switched off, turn the RemScan off by pressing the power button on the bottom
end of the handle once and release. The green light in the centre of the power button will turn red
and then switch off.
20. To download scanning data, remove the SD card from the slot on the top edge of the PDA by
removing the rubber cover and pushing the spring loaded SD card downwards until it pops out.
