For some, gradual adaptation to the vest may be necessary. Start by trying
it on in a safe environment and situation and at shorter intervals. Gradually,
the intervals at which the vest is used can be extended, and gradually the
vest can be used in more challenging situations. For others, it will not take
any getting used to and they immediately find using the vest comfortable
from the get-go.
Healthcare professionals and educators assisting the user with the Reload
vest should pay particular attention to the users’ reaction if they are not
able to clearly express their experiences with the vest. If the user is a child,
be aware of the risk of the vest getting stuck in the immediate surrounding
environment and in toys during playtime.
If a challenging situation is foreseeable, the vest may be put on before it
arises, so that the effect will occur before the situation is at its most chal
-
lenging.
The vest can be used before, during and after a challenging situation; for
example, to calm down before a difficult and challenging task or situation
is about to occur. The vest can be used during the challenging task or situa-
tion, or after the challenging task for its calming effect if the user is upset.
Some users feel that the effect of the vest wears off after about ½ hour
of use, after which they take a break from wearing it. Others benefit from
wearing the vest for several hours at a time.
Since it is a question of feeling and everyone has a different sensory
system, the interval and frequency with which the vest can be used varies
greatly among users. Individual users are recommended to test out the
product and find out what works best for them.
