Ascending, Traversing Across & Descending Slopes, Steps, Inclines etc..
It is important to keep yourself safe at all times when using your wheelchair especially when travelling on
slopes, inclines or while negotiating steps or kerbs. The following guidelines will help provide some
information regarding stability while using your wheelchair.
n.b. Further detailed information can be found in the leaflet DB2004(02) located on www.mhra.gov.uk
Website.
It is also important to plan and select your route carefully to avoid uneven or soft ground and wherever possible
an alternative route should be used. Do not use on an incline if covered in snow, ice or a film of water or oil.
You must not make any unauthorized adaptations or changes to your wheelchair as this may cause your
wheelchair to become instable. You must also avoid incorrect seating positions or movements that will also
cause your wheelchair to become instable.
You must not exceed the maximum carrying capacity of 113kg for this wheelchair.
If you are unsure of any details indicated here, please consult with a qualified person e.g. Authorised Z-Tec

Normal sitting position to maintain stability on level ground.
Normal sitting position to maintain stability while travelling up or down

If the slope is wet or slippery this will further reduce stability.
Normal sitting position to maintain
stability while traversing across a
slope. Do not exceed the maximum
gradient of 10º (18%).

Stability can be improved a little by leaning forward while travelling uphill.
Do not reverse down a hill.
Leaning into the slope can
improve stability
Leaning or reaching e.g. to pickup objects could
increase the risk of instability and assistance should be
sought wherever possible either by someone else or by
means of a mechanical aid.
