Section 2. An Introduction to the RiverSurveyor System
The following topics are covered in Section 2:
•
•
•
Where should a RiverSurveyor be used?
2.1.
What is a RiverSurveyor?
Simply put, the SonTek RiverSurveyor system is a robust and accurate Acoustic Doppler Profiler
Flow Measurement system designed to quickly measure river discharge from a moving vessel.
The RiverSurveyor system combines proven state-of-the-art acoustic Doppler instrumentation
with a Windows-based (2000/NT/ME/XP) software package (Note: Version 4 of RiverSurveyor
is not compatible with Windows 95/98). The high degree of accuracy and ease of use that the
system provides allows you to confidently measure water current velocities and river discharge
using a single mode of operation.
2.2.
Why use a RiverSurveyor?
The RiverSurveyor system and its software package were designed and tested by hydrologists
for hydrologists. The system itself provides unparalleled ease of use and accuracy with the so-
phistication needed to handle some of the most complicated environmental conditions that can be
encountered in the field.
Beginning users will find data collection and analysis a fairly simple task, while advanced users
will benefit from the flexible processing and analytical tools that are provided. One of the major
benefits of the RiverSurveyor system is that long and complicated training courses are not re-
quired before you can start collecting meaningful data.
2.3.
Where should a RiverSurveyor be used?
The RiverSurveyor system has been designed to work in a wide variety of water resource appli-
cations, including:
•
Stream gauging and discharge measurements
•
Bathymetric surveying (sometimes referred to as river transects)
•
Computer modeling calibration and confirmation
The ADP instrument itself can be used in a variety of applications ranging from deep-water
ocean studies, to vessel traffic systems, to shallow-stream current profiling. However, the River-
Surveyor system is specifically designed to measure discharge (the net volume of water moving
past a specific cross-section over a time period) from a moving vessel.
