•
Transmitter
– The acoustic transmitter generates a short pulse of sound with the
majority of energy concentrated in a narrow beam (6 mm in diameter).
•
Receivers
– The acoustic receivers are mounted on arms from the central probe
head. The receivers are sensitive to a narrow beam and are focused on a
common volume located a fixed distance (10 cm; 4 in) from the probe. The
FlowTracker2 uses two or three acoustic receivers for 2D or 3D probes. See
Beam Geometry and 3D Velocity Measurements
•
Sampling volume
– The sampling volume is the physical location of the water
velocity measurement. See
•
Temperature sensor
– The temperature sensor is mounted inside the probe.
Temperature data is used to compensate for changes in sound speed. Sound
speed is used to convert the Doppler shift to water velocity. See
for details on the temperature sensor; see
for details about the effect of sound speed on velocity data.
