Overview 

The purpose of this manual is to provide the user with detailed instructions on the proper installation and use 
of the Retractable Pit Ladder. This includes: 

Hazards associated with the use of this product; 
Explanations of the Features and Functions of this product; 
Installation and Operation instructions. 

After reading this manual, the reader will be able to install and operate the Retractable Pit Ladder in the pit of 
an elevator hoistway. Operation of the Retractable Pit Ladder includes extending the ladder off the wall of the 
pit, and retracting it back up against the pit wall when not in use. 

This ladder complies with ASME A17.1 Code Section 2.2.4.2 for Safe and Convenient Pit Access. 

The equipment covered in this manual should only be installed, used, and serviced by qualified personnel 
trained in proper work and safety procedures. This manual is intended to assist such trained individuals in 
the installation and use of this equipment and is not intended as a substitute for proper training  
and experience. 
This document or any other information regarding this equipment is not intended to cover all of the possible 
situations which may be encountered while using the equipment described herein. Should specific situa-
tions arise which are not covered by the information provided, or should the user desire further details, the 
specifics should be directed to Wurtec, Inc.

WARNING! 

Do not attempt to climb the ladder while it is retracted 
against the pit wall. The Safety Switch does not break 
the elevator safety circuit until the ladder has been 
extended. Entering the pit while the elevator is oper-
ating can result in serious bodily harm or death. 

Climb and descend the ladder in a controlled, deliber-
ate manner. Using the ladder in a haphazard manner 
can result in falls from heights in excess of 4 feet, 
which can result in serious bodily harm or death. 

Always wear proper safety equipment.
